Description

Lucian of Samosata is known for his witty satires which usually take the form of shorter dialogues, but when it came to parodying the genre of history, he wrote a whole (very funny!) novel. The only thing that’s true about A True Story is that nothing in it is true. In this course we will be reading Book 1, which includes a wild adventure to the moon and a war between the inhabitants of the moon and the sun, as well as many other strange encounters, all written in 2nd Century Attic Greek. We will read and discuss the text in Ancient Greek without translation, using paraphrases and synonyms to explain challenging phrases and vocabulary.
